Jake's Starboard-Inspired Bar Mitzvah at Pearl Street Warehouse in Washington, DC

From our very first phone call, I could tell that Jenny had great energy and one big goal for Jake's bar mitzvah: she wanted it to be FUN. And not just for the kids. It was equally important to her that her friends and family have an amazing time, too.

Jake's family has a house in Rehoboth Beach and has been going to the famous Starboard in Dewey Beach for years. Their original idea was to host the bar mitzvah in Dewey, but they ultimately realized that wasn't the most practical option for their guests.

So what did we do? We brought The Starboard to DC!

Bringing a Dewey Beach Favorite to Pearl Street Warehouse

Jake’s Starboard Themed Bar Mitzvah : Pearl Street Warehouse

Pearl Street Warehouse at The Wharf in Washington, DC, was the perfect venue for this casual, nighttime bar mitzvah celebration.

With its live music atmosphere and laid-back vibe, it already had so much of the personality we were looking for. We just needed to add a little Dewey Beach magic.

The goal wasn't to create a traditional bar mitzvah with a beach theme. We wanted guests to feel like they had actually stepped into The Starboard, complete with some of the family's favorite traditions.

And we had a lot of fun making that happen.

How We Transformed This DC Bar Mitzvah Venue Into The Starboard

Beach Balls, Custom Décor, and Fractured Prune Sweatshirts

Beach balls. Lots and lots of beach balls!

We incorporated them throughout the décor, including a fun welcome sign that made use of an existing garage door inside the venue.

We also added beach balls to the merch wall, where kids could grab their very own Fractured Prune sweatshirt. If you know, you know! (#iykyk)

It was a fun way to bring another familiar piece of the family's beach experience into the celebration.

Orange Crushes, Of Course!

You can't bring The Starboard to DC without orange crushes!

Jenny actually purchased two orange crush machines so we could recreate the famous drinks The Starboard is known for. And, of course, we had virgin crushes available for the kids.

It's these kinds of details that make a themed event feel personal rather than just decorative.

A VIP Lounge Just for the Kids

If you've been to The Starboard, you know that VIP cardholders have access to a special area.

Naturally, we had to recreate that, too!

We transformed the upstairs space into a VIP lounge exclusively for the kids, giving them their own place to hang out during the party.

Boardwalk Games and Custom Favors

What's a beach experience without a little boardwalk fun?

We brought in claw machines inspired by the games at Zelky's and filled them with fun toys and custom Jake favors.

I love incorporating interactive elements into mitzvah celebrations, especially when they connect to something meaningful to the family. They give guests something to do beyond dancing and make the whole experience more memorable.

Live Music From Kristin and the Noise

And the most epic part of the night?

We brought in The Starboard's house band, Kristin and the Noise!

They performed live for the majority of the evening, bringing the energy of a fun night out in Dewey Beach right to The Wharf.

This was one of those details that really brought the entire theme together. The décor, drinks, and games created the atmosphere, but having the actual band made it feel like The Starboard.

A Bar Mitzvah That Was Completely Jake

Jake and his family partied all night, and it was so much fun watching this idea come to life.

One of my favorite things about planning bar mitzvahs is finding ways to make each celebration feel completely different. Not every mitzvah needs a formal ballroom, elaborate centerpieces, or a traditional party format.

Sometimes the best inspiration comes from a place your family already loves.

For Jake, that meant bringing a little piece of Dewey Beach to Washington, DC. And I think we can safely say we pulled it off!

If you're looking for more inspiration for a unique bar or bat mitzvah in Washington, DC, I'd love to help you think outside the box and create a celebration that feels like your family.
